Bishops v Hawks (KO CUP) 04/10/14

Paulton Rovers Tomahawks popped down the road to Wells this Weekend to take on The Bishops in the 1st round of the Knockout Cup. Despite the miserable weather, Hawks were looking forward to building on their success from last week and looking confidently for the all-important win.

As the heavens opened the game began, Hawks took an instant lead working the sodden ball cautiously up the court.  Cheryl and Darby dominated in the shooting circle, barely missing a chance to score and rapidly racking up the goals. Kirsty and Vina further dampened the mood of the Bishops by putting in an outstanding performance in defence, keeping a clean sheet and bringing the first quarter to an end.  Hawks 8, Bishops 0.

Soaked to the bone, the second quarter commenced, with the rotation of Victoria to defence. Darby and Cheryl continued to graft well and avoided the puddles to propel Hawks further into the lead. Laura, Victoria and Vina battled hard to intercept the Bishops passes but the clean sheet couldn’t last forever and Bishops were finally let off the mark to finish half time, Hawks 17, Bishops 5.

The third quarter saw the return of Kirsty to the defensive circle. In previous games this has been the quarter where we have allowed the opposition back into the game, however not on this occasion. Despite the rare loose ball slipping through our fingers, Hawks continued to work well as a team, driving the ball forward and limiting the Bishops shots on goal. The 3rd quarter finished with Hawks still on top!  28-6.

With all hope lost of the rain stopping the 4th quarter commenced. Vina joined her sister in the attacking circle and they proved to be a force not to be reckoned with.  The goals continued to accumulate for Hawks while Bishops struggled to amass more than 4 goals against Laura, Kirsty and Victoria in defence. Jade continued to take control in the centre court and the Hawks have sailed through to the 2nd round of the Knock out Cup! The game ended with a team of very wet but happy Hawks. Hawks 38, Bishops 9.

Thanks to our drenched supporters who travelled to Wells. Players of the match (as voted by Bishops) Darby  and Players Player (as voted by Hawks) Darby.
