It was another sunny day for Paulton A’s second match of the season against Newton. Following their close match a fortnight previously Paulton were looking to gain a win with which to get their season started.
The game set off at a fast pace with no team able to stamp their authority on the match. Paulton settled well and made some early interceptions in the mid-court, but Newton were not to be outdone and were able to keep the match on an even keel. Great mid-court play from Deb, Vanessa and Hayley ensured that the Paulton shooters could receive the ball with relative ease, with both Davina and Cheryl on target most of the time. Newton were also settling well and their quick passing down the court ensured that they too were able to feed their shooters, who were netting the ball at almost every attempt. The quarter ended with Newton taking a one-goal lead into the break.
A tense start to the second quarter by Paulton saw Newton begin to find their rhythm early and start to move ahead. Some great work in the circle from Victoria and Charlotte was unfortunately not enough to deter the Newton attack who were scoring at every attempt. The opposition defence were also starting to settle into the game with the keeper making life very difficult in the circle for the Paulton shooters. Some basic errors were beginning to enter the Paulton game giving the away team the opportunity to take possession, from which they were able to score thereby beginning to push the game away from the home side. The second quarter ended 19-30.
After a stern half-time team talk Paulton restarted the match with Vanessa moving to GS with the aim of unsettling the Newton defence and providing a different attacking option within the circle. However, Newton were not letting up and their pace throughout the court meant that Paulton had to fight for every ball. Paulton worked hard to keep their heads to ensure that sloppy play was kept to a minimum as the visitors were taking full advantage of any penalties awarded to them. The end of the third quarter saw the teams leave the court with Newton maintaining their lead with a score of 28-45.
The final quarter saw Charlotte move to WD with Vanessa replacing her at GK. This change, along with a change of shooter by the opposition, seemed to upset the flow that Newton had established in the previous two quarters and Paulton took advantage of this to close the gap between the scores. Cheryl was finding the net with ease, aided by some great athleticism from Davina to maintain possession following any rebounded shots, and this enabled Paulton to start closing the gap. Hayley and Deb continued to work well to feed the circle with some great attacking play, whilst the defence were able to prevent the new Newton shooter from finding her feet in the game. Paulton won the quarter but unfortunately this wasn’t enough to win the match, with Newton winning with a final score of 42-55 .
