Paulton Rover’s third team took to the court in a breakthrough of sunshine on Saturday 21st April to play their third match. With a change to their starting eight with Helen unable to play and new member Shelly in the squad the team confidently warmed up with a mixture of excitement and nerves.
However any nerves were put to rest in the opening minutes of the match as Paulton scored from their first centre pass to then dominate the quarter with great centre play from Ruby at C and Sophie at WA, supported by Kelly at WD. Paulton’s young shooters, Lucie and Zoe, also put into practice circle rotations as demonstrated to them at training on Wednesday to move with ease around Frome’s defenders to score an impressive 11 goals to 2.
The second quarter saw Frome come out fighting with the first of many rotations; however Paulton held their nerve to play some fantastic netball with the ball moving up through the court with speed and accuracy. Paulton’s defence worked hard to overturn rebounds with Shelly also making some inspirational interceptions with her natural ability to read Frome’s play. With Paulton now strongly attacking from all angles their confidence grew putting into practice speed passing from recent training sessions. At half time Paulton led 23 – 2.
After a positive team talk at half time and individual skills to work on the team took to the court with another rotation of Sophie, C, Ruby WA and Lucie coming on at GA swapping with Zoe. Frome also continued to make changes placing height in the centre in an attempt to disrupt Paulton’s shooters. However Paulton’s rotations proved too strong for Frome with Sophie matching the skill and speed of Frome’s C and Megan dodging well in the circle to lose her tall GK. Kelly and Katrina also continued to dominate the centre court making interceptions, tipping many balls for Ruby and Sophie to pick up and attack with. Great focus and team play enabled Paulton to pull ahead 34 – 6.
With the final whistle in site Paulton returned to the court determined to reach 40 goals. Shelly came out to GD swapping with Katrina, Zoe came back on at GA and Ruby and Sophie swapped C and WA between them. Again this new rotation proved too much for Frome with Paulton driving on to passes to keep possession, impressing their spectators with their fitness levels. As the final whistle blew the team had managed to pull away to reach their personal goal of 41 – 6 much to the delight of their spectators.
