Tomahawks first game of the season was against last year’s league winners Trident so the team knew they were up against the strong competition. Despite this the team confidently took to the court eager to play their first game of netball, settling quickly into their new team with Helen at GS and Debbie injured from summer training cheering them on. The first quarter started quickly with Trident keen to establish dominance. However Tomahawks fought back and easily found Cheryl at GA and Helen at GS who scored some fantastic goals against a strong defence. Laura, WD, Victoria, GD and Charlotte, GK also worked hard to limit Trident’s attack but unfortunately the side were too strong scoring an impressive 17 goals to 8.
The second quarter witnessed the start of many rotations for the team with Hayley moving to C, Ness to WD and Laura to WA. This centre court combination gelled quickly with Paulton’s team performance matching that of Trident’s with strong passing throughout the court, aggressive attacking play and quick reactions to intercept balls and set movements. Tomahawks also increased the speed of their game to match that of the oppositions which enabled them to finish the quarter 15 – 26, losing the quarter by 2 goals.
After a positive team talk at half time the team once again came out fighting with another rotation to off put Trident with Laura moving to C, Hayley to WA and Ness to WD. Once again the team fought hard with Victoria and Charlotte securing valuable rebounds from an unstoppable GS. Dynamic movement up the court allowed Hayley and Laura to feed Cheryl and Helen to continue scoring, however the team could not catch up with Trident, finishing the third quarter 42 – 21.
The final quarter saw one more team change with Victoria moving to GA and Cheryl to GK to see if her height could off put the GS. Unfortunately Trident at this point were too dominant for Tomahawks and despite some excellent play from all of the team they lost 57 – 25. However the team were able to walk away knowing that they had tried new match combinations and that they were stronger because of it. The team would like to thank Jade and Sarah for reserving, Jane for umpiring and their supporters for cheering them on.
